Stories after Stroke

Our mission is to empower stroke survivors to articulate and share their stories of wisdom, purpose, connection, and hope.

The Problem

Someone in the United States suffers a stroke every 40 seconds. Stroke is also a leading cause of serious long-term disability in this country. There are nearly 7 million people in the U.S. living with the effects of stroke (UTMB Health). Stroke survivors report loss of identity, purpose, and connection in recovery. Our team is working to address that.

Our Approach

Beyond Stillness hosts personalized reflection sessions for stroke survivors, helping them reframe and share their recovery stories through the lens of wisdom, purpose, connection, and hope. This creates a double win: we empower guests and inspire listeners on their recovery journeys. Our gatherings, retreats, and workshops further cultivate an engaging community.

Your Story

Sharing your stroke recovery story makes a difference. We believe that as part of the stroke community, you are more than supportive, you are inspirational.

“Not only are stories how we make meaning out of life events, they are how we connect with other people and form relationships.”

— Strong Story Lab

A Moment of Pause
for Storytelling and Reflection

Each guest meets weekly with Beyond Stillness via Zoom for about two months to reflect on their recovery and craft their story. Between sessions, guests are given reflective homework to further their journey. In the final session, they record their story and interview for publication on the Beyond Stillness: Stories After Stroke podcast.

Eight episodes are released monthly on major podcast platforms (Apple Podcasts, Audible, Spotify, etc.) and air throughout the week on Stroke Warrior Radio.

Guest Reviews

  • Dr. Simbi

Beyond Stillness did an amazing job of probing and asking questions to help me develop my story. I also enjoyed the weekly conversations. I felt really comfortable. Sharing my story greatly influenced my perspective on my stroke recovery journey. This was the first time that I spent time reviewing the events surrounding my stroke and my recovery journey. I now have a newfound love and respect for myself, and I am more encouraged to share my stroke story to others. I have found my stroke voice. This is a great way to help stroke survivors find their voice. As more and more people start to experience strokes, it is important let others know they are not alone. Help them break their silence and build a stronger community.
