Storycrafting Process
Survivors meet one-on-one with a trained Story Steward once a week via Zoom for an average of seven weeks to reflect on wisdom that has emerged through recovery and craft their story.
First Meeting
Our Story Steward wants to learn about the storyteller, the day of the stroke, and the life wisdom that has emerged since. They will ask questions such as:
What has your post-stroke journey taught you about life? Are there particular events or experiences that shaped this understanding?
How have your values changed since your stroke?
What personal strengths have come to light?
What keeps you going on difficult days? What gives you strength or motivation?
If you could speak to yourself earlier in your post-stroke journey, what would you say?
How has your understanding of recovery evolved over time?
What do you hope others take away from your story?
The storyteller will choose a central theme for their story during this meeting.
Weekly Homework
Each week, our Story Steward gives the Storyteller reflective writing homework to advance the story and deepen their thinking around their chosen theme.
The Story Steward's weekly homework is to revisit the story, edit, organize, offer detailed suggestions, and prepare further questions.
If typing, reading, or writing is challenging for the Storyteller, alternative options are available.
Next Set of Meetings
Each week, the Storyteller and Story Steward meet to review the written work, revisit the story's overarching vision, and chart the path forward. The Storyteller spends most of each meeting articulating specific ways their recovery has taught them the lessons they hope to share with other survivors.
Final Meeting
During the final meeting, the Storyteller shares their story via Zoom, which is recorded. The Story Steward then conducts a closing interview with the Storyteller for publication.
